J. Gunzelman, born to a career Army non-commissioned officer, grew up in Army posts in Germany, but completed high school in Kenmore, New York. A graduate of West Point, he was commissioned an Armor officer and served in command and staff positions in Germany and the United States for twenty-seven years. Before retiring as a colonel, Gunzelman earned an engineering doctorate at the University of Wisconsin and worked for several government and civilian organizations.
