Despite the lack of documentation, she played a pivotal role in James&#8217; life by introducing him to what she called the &#8220;secret sacred songs&#8221; from generations past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As James grew older, he pursued higher education at Fisk University, where he had the privilege of studying under John W. Work III.
