Mechanics of Social Change: A Dynamic Model is an interdisciplinary nonfiction book that applies engineering principles to understanding people, relationships, institutions, and societal change.
Author Donald W. Dareing proposes that society can be examined much like a mechanical system: social environments create “forces,” while individuals and communities respond to those forces. He represents human development through three interconnected dimensions:
• Personal identity, self-worth, and self-esteem
• Relationships and interactions with others
• Spiritual, ethical, and moral growth
Using concepts such as force, motion, leverage, equilibrium, structural strength, friction, vibration, fluid flow, and material failure, Dareing draws parallels between physical systems and social behavior. For example, social division is compared to structural cracking, communication serves as a bridge, education provides leverage, and migration is explored through fluid-mechanics models.
