About the Book

Africa… Table for One is a deeply personal travel memoir chronicling Tami Loehr’s journey through grief, healing, and self-discovery after the death of her husband from brain cancer.

The book begins with the devastating account of her husband Dave’s illness and passing, followed by the emotional aftermath—loss of their shared home, feelings of abandonment by some friends and family, and the crushing loneliness of widowhood. Determined to find a way forward, she decides to fulfill a lifelong dream: traveling to Africa.

What follows is a vivid, heartfelt narrative of her 33-day solo adventure across Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Botswana. Accompanied symbolically by “Sloth,” a stuffed animal that had comforted her husband, and a small container of his ashes, Loehrs experiences wildlife safaris, gorilla treks, conservation programs, and intimate encounters with local cultures. She reflects on themes of resilience, compassion, the healing power of nature, and the profound ways animals and human kindness can restore a broken spirit.

Blending raw memoir with rich travel writing and photography, the book captures both the outer journey across Africa’s breathtaking landscapes and the inner journey toward rediscovering purpose as a “table for one.”
