Sleeping through sounds of sirens
And bus horns honking down South 3rd
Loud gang voices then a pop pop
Was it a car a gun
Or a dream one cannot tell
Down the hall Carmela and Angel
With pasta sauce and cigar smoke wafting
Through their open door and upstairs
Ida making her secret recipe knishes
For everyone in the building
Even blind Hattie who folds her bills
Just so to let her fingers decide
What is one or five or ten
For the delivery man knows
This is a life we must embrace
