A Guidebook for Young People Studying US Slave Songs Part II

25 SECRET SACRET SONGS – DECODED

Anna Dukes, James Thomas’ paternal great-grandmother, is believed to have been born into slavery in the late 1840s, although records from that era are scarce, leaving her exact birth date uncertain. Despite the lack of documentation, she played a pivotal role in James’ life by introducing him to what she called the “secret sacred songs” from generations past.

As James grew older, he pursued higher education at Fisk University, where he had the privilege of studying under John W. Work III. Not only was Work the director of the renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers, but he also facilitated James’ admission to Fisk University and extended an invitation for him to join the prestigious ensemble.
