Brenda Ray was born in Bremerton, Washington, and spent her early school years between Bremerton and a one-room schoolhouse near Lake Ozette. She attended high school in Clallam Bay before graduating from Port Angeles Senior High. After living in several places—including five years in Oklahoma City—she eventually settled in Seattle. Her follow-up memoir, Hideaway II, will be released soon.
