Tom Hanson has been blind since he was six years old, the result of Stickler’s Syndrome, a hereditary genetic abnormality. He was born and raised in Stevens Point, Wisconsin and attended the residential school at the Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. He graduated from UW-Stevens Point, has two master’s degrees from Western Michigan, and a Ph.D. in education of the blind from Case Western Reserve.

He lives in Andover, Kansas with Sue, his wife of 48 years, and guide dog Hank.
