David Clapham, whose hometown is Sheffield, England, comes from a botanical family. He heard much gossip about eminent botanists and read botany at Oxford University in the 1960s, when C. D. Darlington was professor.

From 1967 to 1973, he worked at the then Welsh Plant Breeding Station in Aberystwyth. He then moved to Uppsala, Sweden, where he married a Swede, Lena, who died in 2024. He was associate professor at SLU, Uppsala, experimenting mainly with tree species.
